I am for it, once 18 if you continue to reoffend then you become a criminal nuisance or a danger to society (depending on the crime).

Assuming those using the law employ logic. 26 years for stealing 4 cookies from a restaurant is... ridiculous.

I would be happy to give up my tax cut (if I lived in NZ) in exchange for having offenders put in prison for a term, rather than pay a fine that they will work off doing PD.

I read most of the wiki, but still feel I'd like to hear/read more 'argument' before forming an opinion on this one.

We'll need more prisons. Dont know how this will work practically because it is not going to deter many offenders.

At the moment most prisoners know what their crime was going to net them in terms of sentance before they committed it. Now, many will not know about this and will get a very rude awakening if they go to court.

I'm with Waireka. Provided it's used in proportion to the crime, I'm for it.

The knee-jerk retributionist in me say it's great, the rational side however, that knows that longer sentences do nothing to stop recidivism and that much, much better rehabilitation is the key, says it's dumb.

And since I value rationality over emotion, I have to go with no.

Most criminals commit crimes under the impression that they are too good to be caught. The legnth of the sentrnce means nothing. I spent 3 years working in Justice - EARLY rehabilitation is the key. By early, I mean childhood.

Although in saying all that, I'm not against the bill. I just think it's more ambulance at the bottom of the hill thinking.
