Computer illiterate me trying to help a computer retard friend remove a 'security suite' malware program.

Will the windows malicious software removal tool be of any use?

Malwarebytes Anti Malware sounds useful but will the it be able to run? The malware on the computer seems to be blocking a lot of programs.

It all gets a bit scary after that, things like having to manually delete files or renaming Malwarebytes upon downloading.

Surprised Do NOT delete anything until you have expert advice.

A friend of mine cleaned off her whole hard drive following instructions from a free site and hubby had nightmares trying to recover her data and programs.

Sorry, I can't help. I'm like your friend - totally off the scale as far as naive goes.

I haven't used the windows pre-packaged shit. I have no idea if it works... give it a crack.

I use AVAST as my one-stop computer protection tool. You could download the .exe file and put it on a flash-drive and then install it to your friend's computer that way.

At the risk of asking a really stupid question; you have tried a system-restore right?

My brother in law had malware on his computer that changed everything to porn.

Was awesome, cut down a lot of wasted time.

Re the system-restore. I am doing all this over the phone so I am a bit unsure of whats happening. He says there are no restore points to restore to.

I don't really know why I am bothering to wipe up the mess from this ( bad porn downloading joke)but I guess it's a good learning experience for me. I will google both your suggestions and have a read, thanks.

Haha Psalter, maybe I should leave it how it is and hope the porn gods do that for him too since that's where he got it from.

ASC is the best free spyware/system maintenance tool I've found so far.

I used to be an AVG/Spybot user.

I remember a neighbour once asking me if I could see what was wrong with their computer. I had a look, homepage had been changed to a porn site, and basically everything redirected to more porn. He said "What's wrong with it?" and I said "Dunno, looks fine to me".
