    Polyphasic Sleep Empty Polyphasic Sleep

Post  frup Sun May 30, 2010 1:28 pm

How do you sleep? Do you just sleep the normal 6 - 10 hours per night in a single session or do you have more than one sleep during 24 hours?

I have had pretty messed up sleep patterns for about 10 years now. It's hard to explain but my body clock doesn't seem to be wired to a 24 hour day. I like to sleep for 10 hours at a time though often because of my lifestyle would only sleep for 4 hours or so. The trouble being that at any one session of being awake I naturally stayed awake for 18 - 20 hours at a time. During holidays this was always great Very Happy

In the last year or so though I have been increasingly having naps, at very irregular intervals and I am noticing some odd things starting to happen. The first is that I need less sleep. The second is that I like 2 -3 very short naps in a days. I'm talking an hour or two at a time. This is interesting but I also seem to need to sleep more when I need to sleep. Over an extended period of being awake I am far more likely to crash. I seem to be able to manage a maximum of 14 hours with out a nap now unless fully immersed (such as working). I'm having no more than four hours sleep before going to work, working for 10 hours or so and then coming home and having another nap. I will then get on with my life and maybe have one more hour or 2 nap before having my sleep before work again.

The weird thing about this is I feel less tired than I ever have, it's just coming naturally and I often wake up before alarms I may set, something I have never been inclined to do.

Having said all this just last week I had one occasion where I slept for about 17 hours from 5am to 10.30pm the next night.

    Very Happy

I wish I could nap. I struggle if I dont have 9-10hours of sleep a night. I fall asleep easily at night - and if I crawled into bed at 7pm, chances are I would sleep right through until just before my alarm (5:30am).

I always wake before alarm... infact it's better to set the alarm slightly later than neccesary otherwise I wake up way too early and can't get back to sleep.

I am really envious of people who can nap. TDO would nap every afternoon if I let him... it's hugely frustrating when we've both had a big night or been sick and he can sleep it off, and I am awake feeling miserable.

So consequently I am a bit of a Nana because I struggle to catch up on any missed sleep. Once I am awake in the morning, that's it, I need to be up doing shit, my brain will not switch off again.

    Snippets from my story:

For my first degree, I used to be able to work all through the night to meet a deadline, after being awake during the day. For my second degree, after some years working, I was unable to do this. I also found it harder to study or work at the computer into the night in the winter time.

I often wake a few seconds or minutes before my alarm goes off, which is really great, as I hate hearing the alarm, even though I use a mobile tone which is not too annoying.

I don't usually nap, unless sick, but if I am unusually extra tired, I can nap. But when I nap, I tend not to turn like I do during night sleep - I wake up in the same position I go to sleep in - usually with a sore arm or something from lying on it.

I am a light sleeper, and even if house-mates are quiet, I tend to go to sleep after others do. I also love the quiet time being awake before others rise. So I get less sleep than ideal. Not sure exactly what ideal is for me; I survive on very much less. I'd like to try getting 7.5 hours, but that might not ever be possible.

Oh yeah, and if I wake tooooo early, I mostly don't go back to sleep, even if it's dark, unless it's before 3am.

10 hours minimum every night otherwise I claw people's eyes out.

Can also nap for a couple of hours during the day if I don't have anything else to do.

Always been able to fall asleep in weird circumstances, in planes, under tables, on tables at Waterfront Embarassed etc.

when I was at uni I had very short power sleeps to keep me going

I would wake up at 7:30 to get to uni, finish around 12pm, walk down to work and sleep on the couch for around an hour, start work at 2pm and finish usually bout 1am, play on the computer for about 3 hours, then sleep for 3 hours before starting all over again.

I did run on alot of enerygy drinks and fast food during this time which did take its toll.

Usually during the semester this would work and then during holiday the first weekedn would be spent pretty much sleeping. and I'd be away again.

When I'm not training new people I usually will stop and have a 20 min sleep in the car somwhere and that perks me up for the afternoon.... unfortunatly that will stop when I mvoe into the office next week Very Happy

I can't nap for more than 10 minutes at a time, I try not to get more than 7 hours sleep a night, I find 5 is OK, but generally get 4-5.

Would love to try the Ubermensch sleep schedule but I don't have the time to get my body used to it. That, and I'm skeptical it even works at all.

I can only nap if I'm hungover or haven't slept in a while. I usually don't get to sleep until 3-4am even though I go to bed before midnight. I try to get 8 hours a night but that usually progresses to 10 or more. I have around 3 nights a week where I can't sleep at all, but no-one will give me pills for it because my sleeping issues are not serious enough apparently, even though Dad was prescribed them when he had mild hayfever by the same doctor I go to... Fucked me right off...

People who can't sleep have my sympathy. It is rare that I can't, but even so, that is enough to show me how nasty it is.

I know you didn't ask for advice, but have you tried eating a very light evening meal, with no evening snacks afterward? That is, eat your main meal earlier in the day, and avoid things like hard cheese or meat or nuts in the evening, as they take longer to digest.

    Tried exercise?

Tried chamomile tea? Lavender near your pillow? Wink

I nap. All the time, even before I had Soren.

I can lie down most places and just fall asleep.

In the car, on the floor, at the movies, when I was in NZ outside on the grass. All I need is a pillow for my head.

I'm well known for falling asleep on peoples living room floors, especially if I'm lying in a sunny spot.

I go to sleep between midnight and 2am, depending when Soren has his last feed.

I then wake up about 3am or 4am, do another feed, then again at 6am.

If I'm lucky I'll get an extra 2 hours, depending whether Soren wants to play from 6am onwards. He stays up and has play time all morning, then his dad comes home and we all have an afternoon nap (Jim starts work at 3am).

LOL Waireka, you are a bit like my husband except he doesn't even need to lay down - he will fall asleep at the movies if the movie does not have much action, or in the doc's chair and will even start snoring. Once he nearly fell asleep behind the wheel and veered of the road, so since then I always keep an eye on him and take turns with driving when necessary.

I have always had troubled sleeping, ever since I was a child. On average I sleep 5-6 hours at night but can reasonably function with 4-5 hours of sleep. Then some days I just crash for 8 hours sleep in a row.

You can get Phenergan tablets from the chemist (1st generation allergy pills that cause drowsiness) if you're an adult, and they'll take your personal details, same as when you're buying cold tablets containing PE.
