Knowings - SC Repost Empty Knowings - SC Repost

Post  Tikva Wed Mar 17, 2010 1:11 am

Firstly, please forgive this repost of a post of mine at Smile City ~ I just wanted to ensure that those who are in banned camp could also answer the question if they wanted to.

The following is my Post from SC:

Okay, here goes. I need to ask a question, and one that is probably not for the more intellectual or cynical amongst us here at SC to try to answer. Of Course, you're welcome to try, but at the end of the day, I know what I know, and nothing can ever be said that could possibly change that fact.

Question: Do you, or have you, ever had times in your life when you have KNOWN something, without the slightest bit of doubt, even when there is no possibly way that you could have known?

That's the question, but it might help if I elaborate a little more. The 'knowing' usually relates to a particular future event, and is not something that I can access at will. It is something that may be connected to, or even be the same as, 'gut instincts' or the 'inner voice'.

The reason that I am asking the question is that I would like to know if it is something that we all have (and are aware that we have it), if it is something that most of us have, or if it is something that few of us have.

So, it really would be appreciated if you were willing to answer the question honestly, no matter what you personally think about such things.....

Though I don't consider myself an intellectual or cynical person, I do have trouble with the logic of your question, but I also think you could be much more clear in how it is written.

There is very little certainty about future events, and usually something is only fact once it has happened. Perception, persuasion, memory, belief, and illusion are also complicated things. For example, some dreams are dream-like, and others are very realistic. Depending on the state of one's mind, sometimes the brain can play dream-like tricks when one is awake. That is not an explanation of your topic, but just an example of how complicated our brains are.

Even those who believe in 'prophecy' often believe that prophecy is conditional. For example, some people who accept the Old Testament account of history would believe that if people had listened to Noah's preaching, the flood may have been averted. So his knowing there would be a flood did not make it a fact. Again, this is just an example.

Would you like to try phrasing your question again, asking exactly what you mean, rather than trying to make things general (which risks it sounding a bit waffly)?

How is this different from being closed minded? I am not accusing you of being so; I'm just curious how you'd define the difference.

Thank you for your replies. I will try and elaborate, but can only do so from my own experience/s. Also, I do not believe I am being close-minded; it is simply impossible for me to deny what I have experienced.

    Here is one example:
Before I was married, I was in a very casual relationship with a man for a number of years. One day, out of the blue, he told me that he was going to visit Christchurch, with his plan being to move there. He had no idea when he would be returning from Christchurch, and I had zero contact with him while he was away.

One day, I had what I call one of my 'knowings', and knew that he was coming back that evening, right down to the actual bus that he would be on, even though back then he could have travelled by train, which was his mode of transport when he went to Christchurch. The 'knowing' was strong enough for me to get a babysitter for the latter part of the night, and to go down to the Bus Depot and meet the bus that I 'knew' he was on (arrived around 11 pm I think). Which in fact, he was. Naturally, he was extremely surprised that I was there waiting for him.

As mentioned, this is just one example, but probably the clearest one in terms of ruling out coincidence - at least from my perspective.

Maybe that will help with the question?

Yeah I get what you mean, I do little things like pick up my phone just before I get a text or a call or get a feeling when something bad's about to happen. My Nana passed away in early february and I was at a friends house on the piss, I went home at about 2am as I felt I needed to be there for some reason or other (when I would normally just crash at the friends house) and the phone rang about 2 mins after I got in the door with my Aunty saying Nana had passed.

Tis wierd and is mostly coincidental I think, but sometimes it's too strange to be passed off so easily.

I do this all the time but you have to think about the probability of it happening, how many times do you pick up your phone and that doesn't happen.

Secondly with the phone, as it sends and receives data it uses radio frequencies, no doubt something in peoples bodies can pick this up to some degree, it's not entirely out of bounds that we (or some) can actually feel that to some degree (even if we aren't aware of it)

Yeah, that is a given, but how do you define the difference between being closed-minded (let's say about a particular issue, because it is obvious you are open-minded about many things), and "I know what I know, and nothing can ever be said that could possibly change that fact"?

No, unless there is always a scrap of doubt, then you are insane.
