Very interested in the issues.
My own opinion is that for me personally, copying something illegally but for my personal use INCREASES the chances of me buying the item when I come across it, or even searching for it to buy. If I don't copy it, and therefore don't come across it in my possession every now and again, I forget about it, and then I will never buy it. If I do view/listen to a copied version, it will either
a) remind me that I really love it, so I go and buy it
b) grow on me until I do love it, and then a)
c) make me realise that I don't really like or need it, in which case I will destroy my copy.
